Fuel economy 1996 Calibra 16v

On a recent lengthy day trip I took the usual steps to fill up the tank of my 1996 Calibra 2.0 16v with unleaded fuel, and zeroed the trip mileage recorder. On my return I revisited the same petrol station and got the impression that it didn't require as much fuel as I expected, to completely refill the tank. When I got home I did a few calculations, and was delighted to find that the car had achieved slightly better than 38.5 mpg over the whole trip.

This was no economy run; I did the usual speeds every mile of the journey, except on those all-too-long motorway sections where there were road works governed by averaging speed cameras. The trip also involved plenty of different types of road, including congested junctions, winding country lanes and occasional steep gradients.

In my book 38.5 mpg overall, is pretty good for an 18 year old car with 143k on the clock. Well done Calibra!
