400Bhp Please
400Bhp Please
So what's needed to get 400bhp from my Calibra turbo? And not have it explode every 1000yds
So far:-
Td05 Turbo (Evo 8 I believe) Running 1.4 bar
Tubular manifold
VXR Blue Injectors
Walbro uprated fuel pump
FMIC
Megasquirt standalone management
Arp top/bottom+Steel Rods
Forged internals (except pistons It would seem!)
Baffled sump
3" Tophat
3" Exhaust
Xe inlet cam
Meant to be 330bhp 350Ib/ft=Awaiting RR session

Jet engine ??

Nothing succeeds like a budgie with nae teeth
Up the Hibs!!
Now with added Vectra VXR power
Now calibraless

Re: 400Bhp Please
For 400bhp you'll need also uprated fuel pump and fuel injectors, 550cc at least
Re: 400Bhp Please
Double valve springs
Steel caps
Bronze valve guides
Steel rods/arp bolts
Clutch to suit
Wideband to keep an eye on things would help
Aftermarket inlet with a bigger throttle body will make things easier, but it's not essential

Re: 400Bhp Please
Thats the turbo i was running, would struggle to make 400, but as it boosts so low down(as long as the manifold is twin scroll) you get a very drivable car with a lot of torque and bhp. making it faster than an equivalent hp car.
learn your car properly before you go playing oto much, this power level kills cars with minor mistakes.
ie as above, what injectors are in it, does it have the doube valve springs to stop reversion(you're going to need to up the boost to the 1.8bar area). does it have piston cooling, can the fuel pump/swirl pot keep up with demand. get someone good to map it with the wideband/knock cans.. lots of heat at these boost levels.
wideband, charge temp, EGT, knock sensing etc etc well worth spending on the guages and learning what you should/shouldnt see to spot issues early.
and as ben says a clutch to suit.. expect to pay 500+ for one to cope with the associated torque. multiplate is the propper answer. paddle is the cheaper answer then limit the engien to what the clutch holds.
depending on the temps you're seeing and onset of det, you may want to consider water injection to help.
easily possible, just do it RIGHT and spend the dosh
if you keep the turbo aim for 370/380ish and you'll be more than happy with how fast it is, 12second car easy on the duel scroll.
if you want more, then you'll need to make sure you get the larger housings, the tdo5hr is usually 9,8t you'll want the 10.5t for 400.

As Stu said, you bet me too it again
iv got 280bhp and find it hard to get all the power on to the tar mac some times 400bhp most be great fun

Re: 400Bhp Please
A reliable 400 bhp is possible in the let, to get It I would possibly be looking at a larger turbo with 70mm pipe work and a pulsar gtir inlet manifold over throttle bodies. But as mentioned a small slip up can be costly! Going with a bigger turbo allows for less boost pressure but more flow and as a result same figure but less temp bios up and less stress on components

This is obviously not the only area to look at! You have a good starting point to work from with that set up though!

Re: 400Bhp Please
well whoever mapped the car may have messed up as it now only has 3 pistons that are complete
suspected it was running lean and its burn a hole in a piston

Re: 400Bhp Please
Bit of a bugger
though changing anythign after its mapped (assuming its map based not afm based) will invalidate the ecu map. so it may not be the mappers fault if the owner continued to modify it after the initial mapping session.
they're pretty tolerant to running a bit lean through the low gears, but high speed constant load runs in the higher gears should be avoided as this is where the heat builds up.
definately a dead piston? get some pics up when they're out.. do you know the make and CR of piston in it?

Re: 400Bhp Please
Yeah that's whats done it, took it for a FAST run up the Mway, around 145 it just hit a wall, then lots of smoke out the back!!!
Took head off, Piston 2 has melted slightly and all four pistons have lots of play, assuming the rings are buggered aswell
Fixing it's the easy part-don't want it going again, that concerns me
Going for 550cc Injectors (Prev owner said the VXR blue were maxed out)
New Walbro 255 fuel pump
Swirl pots
Low comp pistons/new rings+Hone the bore, just hoping it doesn't need oversized pistons etc
And A Wideband for 100%

Re: 400Bhp Please
getting the impression they were std pistons? if they wernt modified to produce low compression then it was on borrowed time at that power/boost level...
part the reason i say that is the wobbly piston comment, from playing with these engines a lot i found that std mahle under det conditions the ring grooves in the pistons actually open up so the rings arnt sat properly and the pistons wobble around and knock badly. (as well as poor compression obviously)
A shame this has happened to you so early on

Re: 400Bhp Please
Ps check the head carefully too, as the det will have eaten the head a bit, and undercut the head gastket, so you will need to ensure that this gets machined off to ensure a good seal next time around.

Re: 400Bhp Please
Yeah,Only had it 1 day,Engine had done 17K since re-build
Any advice most welcome,as I'm not throwing money away for it to go bang again
So my shopping list+Anything you suggest
Low Comp pistons+Rings (Meant to have steel rods) Definately ARP top/bottom
550cc Injectors( suggestions on brand etc?)
It has uprated Walbro (2 years old) I will fit new one
Poss Swirl pots?
Wideband lambda for sure
Anything worth doing while in bits?
Running standalone management (Megasquirt Ecu) was mapped by K-Tec in Doreset

Re: 400Bhp Please
so many variables, off the top of my head bar whats been mentioned a lot swap out the std oil pump for uprated if its not already done.. most other things can be done later.
