ECU change

by daz106 » Fri Jun 10, 2005 5:55 pm

My ecu has given up the ghost i think. when i turn the igniton on my ecu light wont go off. then then i start the engine it goes off. earlier i had to wait for the engine light to come on before the car would start. had to leavethe power on for 2 mins roughly before it decided to start. only recent chage i did was take out the thermostat. i have now replced this with a new thermostat but still having this problem.

So my question is can i just tak an ecu form another 1992 16v redtop and change them over if that is the problem or is it something else.

Please help as the missus wants me to sell my calibra.

Hi, have you tried the "paper clip" method for any fault codes, if not have a look on Alan's site -

The light will be on untill you start the engine - don't worry thats normal.

You say sometimes the light doesn't come on and the car won't start - that points to the fuel pump relay. It's where the ECU is, in the panel next to your right foot.

When you take the panel off, it's the relay that kinda rattles/buzzes when you tap it. Just change that, it's easy. 10/20 minutes if you've not done it before.

Yup fuel pump relay. These often go on the Cally, doesn't take much to change it. And alot cheaper than a new ECU:D

You don't need a picture!!! It's the rattly/buzzy/noisy one. Take the kick panel off and you'l know which one.

No don't have the engine running. Just take the kick panel off (you know what I mean?) and tap the black boxes with a screwdriver, lightly, and the one you want is the one that buzzes.
