Now my alternator is shot!

Seems like everyone is having problems!

Went out earlier, no problems at all. As soon as i started the engine to come home, i heard a whirring noise. I panicked cos i thought it was the cam belt, which i know needs doing.
So im crossing my fingers that it can last 2 weeks, when i turn the car off, the battery light comes on and theres a buzzing coming from behind the dash.

My neighbour, who is a mechanic reckons its the alternator.

What do you think?

Problem is, judging by other topics on here im looking at a couple of hundred quid to do it, which I cant afford for another two weeks, without ringing the bank and getting them to increase my overdraft!
