Alternator / Voltage Reg knackered????
I'm overcharging badly as of last night - Voltage gauge reads 16V + and the dash lights up like a chav's christmas tree (E.M light - Airbag light and all sorts) If i load the electrics up by switching everything on i can pull it low enought to get some of the lights off, and the voltage back now to 12V ish........
I guess the Voltage regulator has gone - the big one bolted on to the alternator, not the the one in the dash AutoVaux just tried to sell me.... -
Can these be bought without the Alternator??? if so where from / how much???? (im skint - not been paid since before christmas )

what is the car charging at, both under/overload. with a volt meter across battery (not by gauge in car) ?

For what it's worth a multimeter reads 16.7V across the battery, with little oad on it, which is about what the volts gauge in the car is reading, so i guess im going to learn how to change the alternator later on today local reconditioning place (MAES) says if i get it to them for 8:30 in the morning they'll sort it and i can pick it back up at dinner time my guess is its gonna be about 20 quid for a regulator and it'll be as good as new.......

OK, so i've got the alternator off, in about 2 hours, 3 knuckles and a lot of bad language, but how the h£$l do i get it back on again? i've got a couple off questions that the answers to might be very useful.
1. How does the heat shield for the alternator / starter motor come off?? what else has to be removed to get it off??
2. I've just managed to get the Alternator out over the driveshaft by jacking the front wheel right up and removing the oil pressure gauge sender unit... but doubt it will go back the same way. Should i have removed the driveshaft to do the job??
3. How do you get the top bolt back in the alternator to refit it? take the rear exhaust mainifold off????
4. Anyone done a how to on this?????
cheers

LOLOL cheers for all the replies Anyway to finish off the story, I took the alternator in to MAES this morning, got a phonecall at 11 to say it was done - the regulator and rectifier were both knackered apparently, they replaced them and put new brushes in, cost me just short of £50. Got it back on surprisingly easily, changed the waterpump while i was at it, and all's well at the moment
