Fuel computer problems

by dave_se2 » Mon Aug 04, 2008 12:59 am

HELP PLEASE!!!!! Can anyone tell me why my fuel comp wont work? I've just fitted it in my se2 (16v redtop). When i plug it in (big yellow plug) the digital clock is on 0.00 and adjusts correctly to the right time but if i turn on my headlights it wipes out the time (completely dissapears). When i turn the lights off again the clock comes back on but showing 0.00. Also i have no computer functions display (upper figures) or arrow down the side. I have led dash bulbs fitted all over but not on computer, is this what the problem is? PS; i tried another computer but its still the same. Could it be the switch or is there something i need to do to set it up? Any help would be gratefully recieved. Cheers, Dave.

check you have the yellow plug fully home into the FC, most problems are simply that is not pushed right in, and also check the connections at the white plug under the handbrake

its a simply plug and play thing ..had one in mine for years now

Is the trip comp losing power completely when you turn the lights on, or just the clock part going out? I know the same fuse that does the interior light also does the trip comp power, but I don't think they're related to the headlights. Almost sounds like somethings not wired correctly, which would fit in with what Fraz said about the plug not being in tight.

There is an F in the clock display. Is that what you are talking about?

if it has an F then one of the functions is not working correctly, go through the functions and see what one...or do the paperclip test and read the codes

Image

fault code will be stored if an F is displayed. These can be read out from the fuel computer. Short pins A and D on the diag plug.
Switch on the ignition.
First 12 is flashed 3 times in the top display.
Then if a fault code is stored it will be flashed 3 times.
Otherwise - - - is flashed 3 times.

To clear the fault codes press the raised button

I cant go through the functions as nothing is displayed in the top section. I have just double checked the connections are fully home and have just changed the switch but its still the same. Now going to try the paper clip test! :banging:

err, daft question maybe, but there IS a chip in the back of the fuel comp isn't there???

I sent mine away to get it reprogrammed when I first got my trip comp, but left the comp plugged in and had the F until I got the chip back.

Yep. there is a chip in the back. I have just removed it and plugged it in and the display is exactly the same as it was before! I have also tried a diagnostic check as Fraz suggested but no faults! Getting close to launching it across the field!! :banging:

Update!!! I have stripped the trip computer down and found out the bulb was not fully pushed in so when the lights were switched on the display went blank! Now i need to find out why it has an F in the clock. It was supposed to be for a 16v redtop but who knows.
