Battery's Dead

by Rob Himself » Tue Nov 04, 2008 5:01 pm

Popped out to Asda last night, and the battery light was on. Took a few seconds to turn the engine over and fire up, but assumed it was because I hadn't driven it for a few days.

* The battery is 4 months old *

On driving, the voltage was sat at around 11v... with excesive revving, it did rise to about 13v, but very quickly dropped down again.
Only things on were the headlights and front wipers.

As I got home, it dropped all the way down to about 8v and eventually all the other warning lights came on too and engine died.

First thinking is that the battery isn't holding it's charge, but could also be b) alternator, c) auxiliary belt.

Suggestions on what to do next? Battery's so low it's barely turning over now.

if the belt is still there, then sounds like you need a new alternator.
you can check that with a multimeter. charge teh battery on your charger off the car. put multimeter over battery, start car. should rise slightly.. put on all electrics you can find, should not really drop. if its below the first figure needs either repair/wiring check or new alt.
