Oil Sender Unit....................No pressure indication!!!

Any electrical issues

by tb303 » Sat Jan 08, 2005 7:01 pm

I know this has been discussed in the past however i havent seen anywhere the other half of the installation concerning the oil sender unit connection on pre 95 cars that haven't been prewired with the oil sender unit. As you understand i am having problems myself. i got the sender unit from a guy in Germany and put it in place. followed the cavweb how2 and wired everything up. the battery gauge works. oil gauge - the needle is on the far end. my oil sender unit has 3 wires:

1 or RED wire is (+) when the key is inserted and on first position
2 or BLUE or BLUE/GREEN wire is Oil-Pressure switch Output*
3 or BLUE/WHITE or BLUE/YELLOW wire is Oil-Pressure sensor Output*

*can't realy remember it's dark under the car.

i have connected the red wire on various places mainly on the radio cables and found out that when connected directly on the 12v red cable from the radio loom the needle stays all the way to the right, and when on yellow cable which is fused and i think is ignition, the needle stays just over 0. the oil light on the dash the red one is working perfectly. i tried switching around the blue cables and i found out that if i connect them vice versa the red oil light on the dash doesn't come on at all which i suppose means it's wrong.

any ideas on what is wrong and i need to do to fix the problem? my car is a 1992 cally and nothing was prewired for the gauges. i am good in electronics and i am sure i did everything right.

please check below the pics of the oil sender unit so that you might be able to help me.

cheers
Tio

doesnt look like a duel sender, It looks like it could be a dash light sender (it realy does look like a coolant temp sensor), doesnt look like any ive seen for driving the gauge. the one everyone seems to have is about twice as wide and has 1 push on contact, one screw on contact and earths through the engine, the large screw on connection goes to the feed on your gauge and the push in one is for the ecu.

my German friend was kind enough to send me a pic with all available opel sensors he sells. letme know which one would fit my 1992 cally please.

here is how he describes them:

1.: Older model Oil-Pressure Sensor [2 wires]
2.: Mid model Oil-Pressure Sensor [3 wires]
3.: New model Oil-Pressure Sensor [3 wires]
4.: Oil Pressure switch (for the Oil Light in the dash) [1 wire]

I have the centre oil gauges, and of the three available..... Mine looks most like number 1.

But more like this one:

i have number 2. so number 1 is the best one? do you put 12v on yours?

do you have the wiring instructions for sensor number 1 please?

Yeah I think number one is probably the one you want, if not you could try autovaux but i think they are about £30.

Im not really sure what mine has connected to it as it was already wired up.
As far as i know, the two wires are the digital signal for the light on the dash (should already be there),
and the analogue for the centre gauges (might need to feed one through).

The only reason I know anything about it is cos one of the wires on mine snapped a while ago.

Here's a wiring digram for the back of the gauges... (cant garantee how accurate it is tho!)

The sender you want SHOULD look something like THIS:
