Relays

Any electrical issues

This maybe a daft question but:-

I'm wiring up some extra interior lights. I've sorted the supply out but i'd like to use a seperate power supply to feed the extra lights.

Am I right in thinking a relay will take a supply from the lights via + and -
then have another + and - connection , + from battery (fused) - out to the extra lights.

Right or wrong, if so why?
is there a type of relay that I need?

Cheers in advance, sofa
