Reluctor ring?

Reluctor ring?

by mfw898y » Wed Oct 12, 2005 4:50 pm

Anyone know what a reluctor ring fault is?
Had it into garage (not vauxhall dealer) and he said the code fault code indicates a relutor ring fault or ECM fault.
Its a 94 ecotec 16v and has resorted to limp mode i.e reduced power and wont rev above 4000-4500k.
Cheers, Danny

never heard of one....... use this and a piece of wire / paperclip and get the code yourself, then it'll be a cheap easy fix......

It comes up with collant temp sensor but surely that wouldnt cause it to misfire and limit itself?
The other one is incorrect revs per min but ive changed crank sensor and still gettin same problem.

If you're sure that's the right code, then why not, without a temp. sensor the ECU can not get the mixture right (like having choke on all the time??) crank sensor - was the engine running?? if not - that's why....... Remember to check wires to, and connection on, a sensor before changing it.......
£17 for a coolent temp. sensor is probably far less than you just paid at the garage, for some "reluctor ring" fault - i assume you've noticed that there's no such fault code and most likely you've been stitched up like a kipper.
Ahh and don't forget to reset the fault codes in the ECU after reading them (disconnect battery for 2 mins - remember radio codes alarms etc), then if it come back you know for certain what it is.......

The ring is the bit that the speed sensors pickup their pulse from. the cogged thing.
Had never heard of it before either, so looked it up on google.. now i know lol..

So odds are they mean the crank speed signal fault.. read again with the engine running etc, see if it goes away, if not they might just be right and your ring might be damaged(sounds very unpleasant!)

Changed cam phase sensor, and crank sensor now. coolant temp sensor seems ok after checking it with multi meter. Still running poo! Fault code still showing low revs.
It was fine when i switched it off night before, then wouldn't go the next day. Cant see how ring has broken over night unless its cracked due to thermal shock or some strange reason. This problem has me and the garage at a dead end and the worst bit about it is that i am loosing the will to keep my beloved cally.
Not even Vauxhall themselves can take away the ambiguity of "low revs".

Ok, i'll eat my words it, but EPC doesn't call it a reluctor ring..... it's number 3 on here, but looks like it's crank out to change it.......

dunno if it would be possiable to see the teeth through the hole where the sensor fit's to check they are clean and none are missing etc.....

I thought the reluctor went on the distributor some where?

Its not got a distributor as such. It like a hall effect system.

Isnt the hall effect system the way the battery works?

Summat like "If a cyrstal has a charge or summat put through it, when its magnetised it forms voltage" Is that right guys?

The hall effect rings a bell its kinda on the tip of me tongue........
