V6 EML Annoying Now

by C411BRA » Sat Aug 05, 2006 8:48 am

What is wrong here?

Get Code 17 EML - Rear Knock.

Unbolt both knock sensors and swap them over. Reset ECU. Fault clear. After a few mins Idling, Fault 16.

Good proves knock sensor not wiring. Replace knock sensor. Reset ECU. Fault clear. Fault stays clear until you hit thr throttle. Fault 16 againg.

Can anyone help me please. Im getting annoyed now especially after having the cam HES probs all last week.

Tired buying a new knock sensor from VX, only £40. Check the plug and loom to see if it has broken or melted anywhere.

Thats what I did Dicky, after swapping them over, to prove sensor or wiring. Now Fault 16 wont go away.

Yeah, thats whats confusing me. I checked the wiring and there didnt 'seem' to be anything wrong, so thats why I swapped fron to rear. I was thinking that this would prove the fault was in the sensor if the fault transferred to the front (17).

Thats exactly what it did. Got a new one from my local VX dealer, and fitted it and now fault 16 wont go away. Well id does while idling, after ecu reset, but soon as you pick up the revs to drive off, it fails again. But only on the front.

I'm thinking I may swap fron to back again to see if the fault transfers with the new sensor, I suppose it could be a dead new one.

Just in a bit of a quandry as to what else to do.

I just swapped the connections over and now the rear fails. So I apear to have broken the sensor.

According to a guy on MIG, these things are very torque sensitive, they are supposed to be taken up to 20nm (14 LbFt) any tighter and they break.

So thats another £35.

Beware.

This is getting ridiculous, replaced the front knock sensor AGAIN. All torqued up nicely. Car was idling for ages before i took it for a run, no fault, for abut 2 hours. Drove off, down the road, soon as I hit 4K rpm, on it came again, Fault 16, AGAIN.

HELP!!

well considering the wiring has put up with below freezing temps and hotter than hell temps and everything in between for 12 years i should think its a little tired

Thats what I was thinking.

Anyone know where the earth point is for the ECU?

Seems a good place to start, along with sensor line resistance checks.

Unplug both sensors, reset ecu and start up. you should get code 16 and 17. plug front sensor back in and reset ecu, that should clear code 17 if working leaving code 16 logged. im quite sure code 16 is the rear knock sensor and 17 is the front one contrary to everything i have read also, i know how confusing it gets trying to work out witch is witch ive been there myself.

v6calibra.com also states code17 = rear, code 16 = front. This in my case was wrong and is infact the other way round.
