every wire i could find
lead from gear box to - on battery
new battery
new coil

plugs
looked at all fuses,
all i can say is when it does start what a lovely smooth running engine i have now(with all the new parts)

if the garage finds out whats wrong with mine ill let u know,

do u have trouble turning your imobliser off some times? if u do that could be our problem

Thanks Jay, Yea please let us know!!

IM now begining to think that this could be mechanical...... I mean the engine managment in these cars is so good that if something electrical was wrong im sure it would have a thousand lights on the dash for it :-)

Well on the plus side, When I bought my Cali 3 months ago it had 5 warning lights of different descriptions that were always on, But one by one Ive got them to go out (By fixing the problem not taking the bulbs out lol ) and yesturday the last one went out !

But still need to get this problem sorted, Keep us posted mate.
Cheers

hmmm. i read the whole thread. thought i was the only one having this problem. my car starts up from the first attempt. Then, when i drive it for a while 5-10 minutes and stop at a kiosk or something it wont start again. What i've noticed though and you should check this too, is that the ecu light is on on the first 2 attempts and then goes off. then if i leave it there for 2-3 minutes till the ecu light comes back on, it takes only 2 attempts and starts. I dont know what's wrong anymore. I had replaced dizzy cap and rotor arm 2-3 months ago before the problem appeared. Then i replaced the battery because it was weak indeed and lastly i am planning to change my alternator because it seems that the car looses electrical power. I mean when i switch on the car the voltometer shows 14V and when driving after 15-20 minutes the voltometer shows only 12V. I replaced the ground cable of the alternator with a realy thick one but still getting the same problem. The last thing i changed before the problem had appeared was the ignition plug leads with 9.2mm custom ones. I dont suppose it's that, is it? I am thinking of replacing the coil now. I also have a new fuel pump. For my car i am very positive it has something to do with the ecu as i removed the diagnistic plug and found that one of the 2 pins was bend and did not connect at all. i fixed that ut still the same. it happened today again. Another thing i had done recently is that i took the car at opel and they replaced the old heater box with a complete aircon system on my car. A new alternator is a must for me since a 70A one will not handle the aircon in the summer. It's already 26 degrees here.

hope you guys can help.

Hi guys!

Right, I think I have found the problem! HOO RAY !

Its the ICV (Idle control Valve), I did a bit of a bodge cleaening job on it and the car started perfectly for quick a while, although ita got gradually worse over a week or so, so tonight I plan to take the whole unit out of the car and give it a good clean, Ill report back tomorrow with the results!

cheers
Mark.

Well, I took the ICV out last night and gave it a good clean and all pipes etc.
It does start easier now but has not cured the problem......
Anybody got any more ideas, I have now run out!

I wouldn't suspect the alternator unless it was noisy or not charging properly (if you have no volt gauge, try using a multimeter).

The ICV is a pain in the rear, and also very expensive to replace. Mine is a bit naff but I'm living with it.

hi peps not been on for a wile,my pc went bang and had to rebuild it,anyway
ive still got the same problem and was thinking has any1 thought it could be the starter motor not kicking in properly,
i think thats what ill be changing next week end,
as for the icv i cleaned mine and it has helped with the idle and has made the car feel a bit quicker, but i dont think thats got anything to do with starting,
keep the ideas comeing
i hope we can find the source of the problem

Hi Jay!

Well if you look at the list of parts i have already replaced I have already replaced the starter motor, didnt make a bit of difference.......

Cheers
Mark

Think I might look out for a starting/ charging loom and replace the old one, just to make sure all the connections are good.......

Does anybody know how much these are and where I can pick one up ?
Cheers

silly me i must of missed that bit,

i might be barking up the wrong tree but today i changed my air filter to a pipercross induction kit and its been starting up like new,i know that changing the air filter wont make it start properly but i might of touched something in that area of the engine to make it start fine,
ive just got my fingers crossed what ever i touched has solved my problem!,
ill let u know if it still starts ok in a couple of days,
my fingers are crossed
