Altinator

When the electric fan kicks in I am getting a squeel. The mechanic says its the altinator pully or belt. One might cause the other. Pully off line leads to belt distortion, belt distortion loads the pully.
Anyway he is suggesting that I renovate the altinator as it hasn't seen daylight in 14 years. I'm from the old school "if it ain't broke dont fix it".
The cars done 210,000km is a 1991 redtop.
Is he right? Advice from someone who has done the job!

Dubious unless the increased load on the alternator is causing the problem.

Id check the fan isnt hitting at the edges anywere or try wd40 on the motor , it could be the fan itself, it wont always do it if you spin it by hand as the force isnt so great

related but not related, where is the alternator? had my battery tested today and mine isnt charging properly
