dash electrics prob?

by fatbloater78 » Sun Aug 14, 2005 1:43 am

can anyone shed some light on my problem.
i was driving home from holiday today thinking how much i love the cally for her problem free 700 miles over the week. the mrs pluged the dvd player into the ashtray lighter for the kids as she did this the following things happened.
1) stereo stops
2)battery light comes on
3)fuel gauge stops working
4)temp gauge stops working
5)rev counter starts doing whatever it wants(regardless of what the engine is doing)
6)battery gauge in the dash above ashtray stops workng.
7)heated rear screen stops working

at first i thought my alternator may have gone but everything else is still working fine ie dash lights, head lights, windows sunroof and wipers also since i have got home the stereo has started to work but the speaker on the back right hand side is quieter than the other 4.

i am planning to sort it tomorrow so if anyone could chuck some ideas it will save me going in blind.

thanxs.

so all this only happened when a DVD player was powered using the Cig lighter ?

have you used the lighter before for anything? I would be suspecting that the plug on DVD has somehow shorted out the Cig lighter ...some of these are a bit bigger than the actual ighter and they can do this

Try fuses on the top row around the middle of the row , i think it was fuse 11, a year or so ago i plugged a phone charger in and it flashed a spark and all sorts went very strange on the dash, immobiliser turned off, radio turned off, fuel gauge didnt work

I had this as well on the way to Spain, my Fridge overheated the plug and blew out everything. Changed the fuse and all was well. Scary at the time though what with all those lights coming on etc. I don,t think much of the Lighter Sockets on callies, you have to constantly wiggle things to get them to work or sometimes they don,t work at all.
