yet another Engine Management Light problem

Yes people, it's another classic re-occurring Vaux problem. Upon startup and running of my C20XE, i encounter no probelms whatsoever. But then, out of nowhere, the engine management light will flash up on the dashboard, stay put for about 5 or 6 seconds, then disappear again. If you drop the clutch and let the revs return to idle circa 1,000rpm then it also turns the light off. Because the engine management light isn't continually on, will a fault code reader pick the problem up? I know that the first reply will be to try the paperclip test, but i'm rather nervous to say the least. The idle control valve was taken off and cleaned with card cleaner and the pipe to inlet manifold replaced at the same time relatively recently, so can't see that as being the problem. Only other thing i've done is an ecotec valve, but tried it with that shut to no avail. Only other things i've got on the engine are a power cap and K&N panel filter. Tried re-setting the ecu by disconnecting the battery but again, nothing. Could it be one of the 2 air mass / air flow meters i've got between the airbox and powercap, or possibly the lambda sensor in the exhaust? Really don't fancy takin it to Quest for a Tech1, but for £15, i'm considering it atm.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Charles
