v6 knock sensors

need some help guys. had knock sensor problem ever since changing the alternator on my v6. fault code is reading code 16 and according to v6calibra.com its the front one. if i caught anything it would have been the rear one, had no problems before the alternator was changed, is there any way i can tell for sure witch one is causing the fault - will they cause a code to be logged if they are unplugged? if they do i could find out witch is witch by seeing witch one logs code 17 when unplugged. does that make any sense or am i losing it !

Chances are it just the wiring causing the problems. The wiring for the front one runs round the hottest part of the engine which eventually causes it to deteriate. Either that or you caught the wire. Could be worth just tracing it back from the sensor. But i have no idea where the sensor is. Hope this helps a bit

cheers mate, i know about the wiring probs associated with knock sensors- just seems strange that the fault only occured after and alternator swap and the sensor near the alternator is the second ciurcit, should generate code 17 on error - just want to be sure that code 16 is the front and not the back(alternator side)

As you know the rear knock sensor is very close to the alternator and was probably removed when the alternater was changed over sometimes these are not put back in quite right worth haveing the car up in the air and checking / cleaning the contacts.

symptoms should be a loss of power if thats any help

I believe the front one shows code 16...had the fault on mine and gave it a good clean which appears to have sorted it out without resorting to replacemant of thae sensor or wiring!
