Fault Codes
Fault Codes
My ECU light flashed last week just before my oil cooler went. But it has flashed a few times since during this week. So I did the test but dont really under stand whats happening. *=flash -=pause.
Ok so I turn the ignition on ECU comes on then goes of as normal. Then it starts flashing this at me

It never repeats the first 4 codes again just the ***-* and *-** ones over and over.
Any ideas?

12 is normal for testing and i'm sure 31 is for when the engine isn't running, it should flash the code 12 three times then go on to the next code that flashes 3 times then will go back to 12 and flash that three times, thats if you have no other fault codes stored, did u have the engine running when flashing the codes,
best bet dc the battery for an hour or two then do it again, i know what u mean though when u first flash them its confusing but u soon get the hang of it

No I didnt have the engine running. I will do that now. The ECU light has been flashing at me when I have been taking my foot of the throttle (not all the time) Probably 3 times this week. This is all after the oil cooler went on me. So is it better to start the engine and then read them Cozy?
Cheers for the help

yes mate, i would dc the battery first as it may have codes from before the oil cooler went so dc'ing the battery should clear them, so if u do that and flash the codes then if there isn;t any codes it should just show code 12 flashing and that is normal and yes i think if u have the engine running code 31 won't come up
then if all is ok and there is still a fault it should make the engine management light come on and that will store a code for when u flash the codes again, basically code 12 is normal its used to seperate the codes do if all you see is *_** over and over again with the engine running there isn't anything stored

I have a good hours drive later on tonight. So that should flash again if anything is wrong I hope. Then I can check them with the engine running when I get home.
Great stuff. Cheers Cozy <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
no probs mate hope it doesn't light up, even if it does its probably a dirty electrical connection or dodgy sensor somewhere

<!--QuoteBegin-Cozy+--><div class='quotetop'>(Cozy)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->also when your eml has flashed at you taking your foot off the pedal does it stay lit or does it go out if u apply the throttle again, as a eml light needs to stay lit for a good few seconds to store a code<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I saw 30 seconds on that topbuzz site and I did wonder about that. Mine does seem to go out when I press the throttle. So say its on for 3-4 secs tops then it goes out.
Whats that mean then.

more than likely a dirty connection or a sensor on its way out i reckon, while u have the battery disconnected just try cleaning the electrical sensor on the air mass meter and see if it happens again

the white electrical connection in pic, pull it off give it a clean and plug it back in, may solve it, did for me anyway, think i was getting something similar to yours but mine was when i put my foot down rather than takeing it off

I actually gave them a good clean when I was having probs with stalling. Actually it was you who told me to clean them. And that cured the stalling when the weather was hot. But I will double check them cause they may have got dirty when the oil cooler went as sh1t from the water tank flew everywhere
I cant leave you any rep points. I need to spread the love apparently

I found your post with the knock sensor and cam sensors. Gave them a nice clean.
Also

The white plug is well loose. I mean it would move etc if I went over bumps, so I think that may be the problem. Now about to secure it, the clip isnt holding it tight at all. I could blow on it and it would move. Theres also a connecter down by the brake fluid container, not sure what that is but gave that a clean as well. It comes from the loom on the left hand side the same loom for the connecters in the pic.
