Coolant Level Sensor Faulty

by hormonedmonkey » Sun Jul 02, 2006 2:44 am

It must be..... now is it just a case of replacing the cap with the 2 connectors going into it????

Does anyone have one?

I've trauled round the breakers and hunted on the net to no avail!

check the wires coming off as mine was playing up and all it was was the wires shorting it will be about 2-3 inches from the cap

does the float move freely? Mine was stuck up causing it to not work.

If you take the connectors off the sensor does the light stay on?

If the float is down it makes the circuit, therefore unplugged the light should be off. if it's still on it's the wiring loom somewhere and not the switch.

Take the connector off and short them out together. the light should go out then. If it doesn't, this means there is a break in the wire somewhere. But if it does go ut, then this means the cap is fautly. I think the cap from Vauxh is abou £30?!!!

when it looked like i had to get yet another last year, i did this as well and it worked, when it stops working, i just wash it under a tap moving the float round, let it dry, then put it back in for another 6 months till it does it again

I had to replace mine on my 16v, in the end the dealer didnt have one for a Calibra but had one for a Carlton, this fitted, but was alot cheaper! Take ur old one and have a look at this option if you have to get another new one, cost me bout 15 quid instead of 30!

Iceman >> Why is it conflicting advice?!!! WHat you say is that if you take the connectors off, the lights should stay on. Which is correct.

What I said was if you short the connector pins together, then the lights should go out. Which again is correct.

You see what I mean?!!!

The way they work is that:

When coolant level is up to the right level, the float in the cap is floating so making a contact between the 2 pins, so the light stays out.

When the level falls below the level, then the float won't be floating anymore and won't make the contact, hence the light comes on.

This is how all the sensor wires are wired in the vauxhall. When they are ok( level ok) they make the circuit, and when the level is not ok, then they break the circuit.

Yeah Naz - I got it backwards if you read my previous post again... I was guessing.

I.e. I was sorry for giving the wrong info... as in I said if you unplug it the light should go out (ooops)
