Alternator fan prob

by sam_p2000 » Thu Oct 12, 2006 9:39 am

Anybody on here know if the motor inside the V6 alternator fan is available...either that or any tips for a substitute? I investigated as when my lights and seats are on im only showing 12.5 volts  think my alternator could be up the chute now!

Alternator should give a constant supply of about 14 volts no matter what the load or engine speed as they have a voltage stabaliser in them ...if mine is dropping down when its under load its obviously on its way out! All i need to know is how to fix or substitute the damn cooling fan motor so the new alternator wont die in the same fashon.

the seats take a huge drain though, with them off it'll be fine

True...im getting 13v with just the headlights on so perhaps things arent so bad....how important is that alternator cooling fan? It must have been siezed for a while as there are lots of old leaves in the fan housing. By that i mean should i stop using the car untill its fixed or will it be ok to use till one pops up on e-bay?

I'd get it sorted as soon as poss...I know mine will come on for 10 -15 mins to cool the alternator (Just had a new one fitted after mine started to play up, however that was because it had been coated in oil from a leak for two years!)..not having it working will affect the life of the alternator I would immagine, and they ain't cheep. If it packs in you'll need a new alternator and a new fan?...better to be safe thatn sorry.

Got it...i did wonder about it but mk 2 cavs are rare as rocking horse siht in breakers around here. Its a shame there isnt a standard mass produced motor that would drop back in thats still available out there. I cant be the only one who has had this problem.
