Pressure guage not reading right

Any electrical issues

by cornishtaz » Thu Aug 23, 2007 9:22 pm

I've got a minor elec problem with my Volt/Oil guages on my V6. The voltmeter works fine but the oil pressure reads full scale even without the engine running. I've disconnected the electrical contacts at the pressure switch fault still there, I've also disconnected the connector next to the inlet pipe and fault still apparent. Am I right in thinking that full scale deflection is a short to earth or is my guage knackered.

Could well be a short, you could also try running a new wire from oil gauge to sender and maybe a new wire to earth to see what happens.

I'll give it a go, as it looks like the original wires are embedded in the main loom.

You'll still get the same result with the contacts disconnected. I had the same fault recently and it turned out to be corroded wire at the connector end. Stripped it back an inch and put a new connector on and it worked first time. If that doesn't work then it could also be a faulty pressure switch?

I'll give it a go. Am I right in thinking though that full scale deflection is a dead short to earth?

If you take the wire off and earth it the gauge should read zero if it doesnt the wire is at fault my guess is that the sender is faulty or a bad connection to the sender

I've just shorted the non-insulated wire to earth and the gauge reads zero. Anyone know the routing so I can check for any chaffing? Also do you need to drain any oil out to change the pressure switch?

Hardly any oil will come out when you change the sender unit. Tracing the wire will be a nightmare personally I think its the sender as when you earth it the gauge reads zero so dont think the wire is at fault.
