This was mounted to the front fan and i wondered what it was

Where do the wires go back to?
Looks like it might have been uesd as some sort of earth point, fairly meaty chunk of bracket!

tthermo coupler by the looks of things ..might be because your fan switch is not working and somene fitted that to by pass it

hmm its got a spring inside of it. Not sure where the wires go not really had a good look. The fan was plugged straight in though and worked. The thermostat was known to be buggered tho... hmm
