engine management light comes on

my engine management light sometimes comes on then goes off after a while. it does'nt seem to affect performance or anything or have any problems.
any salutions of what this could be.
i have a 1990 2.0l 8v calibra.

should be able to read the codes off that engine so then you'll know exactly what it is

short pins A and B on the diagnostics plug and count the flashes, search for the "paperclip test" on here for full details

likely causes aging lambda sensor if mostly uphill.
