Fuel / temp guages...

Any electrical issues

Hi there, newbie here. Had my 16v (redtop) a week and have a question regarding the quages. Temp guage reads really low, but I will test the sender later on, as i've tested the 'stat and it's good, but will it make the car use more fuel thinking it's cold?
also, my fuel guage has dropped from half to empty within 50 miles! Are the clocks known for this as some other (ford's) do? When should the warninig light come on - ie. how many litres left?
Cheers,
Jay.

Something definately wrong there. The gauges shoudn't affect your fuel consumption. Check your fuel pipes, you may have a leak somewhere. Can you smell petrol at all, when was your last service and how do you drive?

Light normally comes on when you got about 30 miles of fuel left. (It does on the turbo anyway and I've got a fuel comp)

could be your thermostats jammed open or not there, engine runs realy cold in this weather so uses loads of petrol, not likely to be coolant temp sensor as its different for the ecu than the gauge on the dash, so if it says cold on the dash and its using loads of fuel its probably is running cold

Cheers.
No smell of fuel. Think it's the gauge lying, not horrendous MPG though. Anyone elses gauge lay down and die before it should? Goes to the top ok when full too...
Said empty when i got it and only took 40 odd litres to brim the tank aswell, so sould be a tenner left in there based on it being 60 litre tank eh?
Stat is present and working, boile id with some eggs as I was suspicious.

Temp guage all sorted! New sender, I changed the thermostat and sealing ring, coolant and couple of overflow pipe clips at the same time. Now sits nicely @ 85 degrees most of the time at a constant speed.
Fuel gauge - I decided to run until it stopped with a can of fuel in the boot, got around 390 miles from the tankful, (which included about 100 miles of lumpy running pre-service when I got it and lots of idling on the drive while things have been sorted out etc.) run for about 50 miles or so with the fuel light on before it started to miss, so I think it definitely goes to empty early but at least I know it's not horrendous on fuel now.
Runs lovely now, fully serviced (including usually ignored fuel filter) and my new Magnex was fitted on saturday too! Only leaves injectors to be changed now and then ECU reset.
Cheers for any input by the way.
