Rear brake Shims???

by WillsToy » Tue Jun 07, 2005 11:17 pm

OK rear brakes started to squeal a little,
so decided to pull themapart for a look, nothing stuck out like a sore thumb so consulted the haynes manual.
now this mentions an anti squeal shim fitted between pad and caliper???
I did'nt have these??? and pads were changed as part of service when i bought the car, so they had plenty of life left.
Which is now out of gurantee 6 months for what its worth
Was just wondering if everyone has these shims or is it a 4x4 mod etc

I have an 95 se4 8v

cheers in adavance for any help

You have to laugh,
spoke to the vauxhall dealer who thinks that all pads now come with the shims fitted??
Now as i dont know where the pads came from and what they should look like i cant tell if they have shims or not.

Anyway after looking up the part number for the shim kit , we find out that s model chassis should have the shim and t models shouldnt.
and guess what mines and s....
so shim kitted ordered and hopefully fitted today

Hope this cures the squeal problem or i'll go mad

regards

my last set of mintex pads came with a thin hard rubber piece along the top flat face and they didnt squeel, i destroyed one taking calipers on,off,on ,off to put the disks on now the side without the rubber bit squeels on heavy breaking
is the rubber bit the anti squeal shim, ive heard of them on most of my other cars in the manual but never seen one so i ignored that bit!

Well fitted the shims along with cleaning out the muck with a good blast of brake cleaner  and so far so good no squealing.....

Will see how it goes over the next week or so
shims cost £8.27 p.no v0090278948
but i must stress or s series chassis and its quite possible that you pads may come with them fitted, according to the vauxhall dealer
i noticed that my pads were unipart  so may change them at a later date anyway

i have a few pics of the shims will try and post up sometime

just done my rear brakes and the shims were on the old pads. took them off and applied some copper grease to both edges (not the pad ) and replaced them with the new pads which also had the rubber pad stuck on the as well. i mine start to squeal i'll wont to know why.
