shocks gone?????

hi guys, just latley i've been giving a couple of lads a lift to work, and i've discovered that when i take a right hand bend at any speed other than crawling i get a rubbing noise from under the car. don't know whats rubbing but i'm wondering if my shocks might be on the way out. anyone got any suggestions as to if this is so, what to get as a replacement, and if i can do the work myself? is it a big job to change the springs and dampeners? any comments would be a help cheers
