Do I Need to Shorten my Bumpstops??

by dazjb » Wed Jul 27, 2005 10:11 pm

G'day all,

I've just took the budget 'Gmax' option of lowering my car (keep the comments to a minimum! ). Received the kit today - a full kit 40mm drop, dampers and springs with a little note inside saying :-

'PLEASE NOTE You must shorten original bumpstops by 20mm minimum'

Can I ask you peeps the following :-

1.) Do I really need to shorten the bumstops 20mm?

2.) What is? ... and whereabouts is the bumpstop, and how do I shorten them?!?

Cheers

Bump stop is a piece of hard(ish) rubber mounted on the chassis which the suspension 'bumps' onto when compressed to it's minimum length.

They advise to do it because if you didn't your car would probably hit the bumpstops a fair way before the suspension gets to it's maximum compression. Which would give you terrible handling.

Ahh, thanks for that DC. Will this be easy enough to do once I have the strut out and disassembled when i'm replacing the springs and dampers? Any advice on where its positioned within the strut or is this obvious once you have the strut removed?

I take it this is just for the front and not the back??

Sorry for all the questions but this is my first attempt at replacing the springs/dampers and I just want to make sure I get it right.

Cheers

Almost correct..

Bump stops are on the back and IIRC not on the front.

Look out for a piece of cone shaped (I think) rubber fastened to the underside of the chasssis where the suspension arm will hit if moved full upwards.

And I would have been searching around like a fool trying to locate this on the front struts! LOL

Sounds easy enough. Thanks again.

Ammendment.....

Bump stops on front are part of Suspension Strut.

They are hard rubber rings around the inner strut (inside of the spring) of the assembly.

Just chop them in half with a hacksaw. Works fine

By the way I was very impressed with the full Gmax kit... here you can see it on my 8v with 19s

When it was on 15's with the Gmax kit the handling was very very good. Probably close to what I've achieved with my current 4x4 turbo (and i'm very fussy)

So don't give yourself the idea that a budget kit is necessarily worse than say a full Spax kit

And trust me don't mess it up by putting big wheels on ^

Thanks for that, makes me feel a bit better about putting the kit on hearing other peoples experiences, not everybody has negative things to say about Gmax so it cant be that bad.

I'll be sticking with the 17's as I dont want to compromise the ride quality any more as this will be reduced enough once its lowered ... your 19's do look mint though!!

Cheers
