hand brake adjustment

by Robs-se » Fri Aug 26, 2005 9:40 pm

today i replaced the brake shoes. now when i apply the hand brake i get to the tenth notch on the handbrake lever before it actually works.
I followed the haynes manual but have gone wrong somewhere. Anyone any tips on where i probably went wrong. After loosening the adjuster yolk thing could i have not tightened it properly???

whoever put the spring under the adjuster wheel must have been ******* when he designed it. its a bugger to turn once the hub is on.

Also the spring, clip and cups that Vaux sold me according to their parts listing was different to the set up that was on the car... how bizzar

not sure been a while

but you need to adust the shoes so its a tight fit putting the drum on ..they should just lightly skiff whne you turn the drum..also make sure you have slackened the cable off a good bit before you do anything

you can also adust the shoes by the small holes in the back plate and once your happy you then take up slack on the cable

as for the retaining pins, they no longer do the ones that are fitted on the calibra which go in from the front of the back plate

you can get the newer ones on but it a bit of a job as you need to take the top two hub bolts off and bend the back plate a bit to get the pin behind the abs ring side of back plate

Rob,

you sure you ain't tightened it the wrong way?

as fraz says put the shoes on adjusted to the hub so they are a tight fit, and just remember the right way to tighten them

haynes say have the handbrake on 3 clicks tighten the adjuster until you get resistance put the handbrake on 6 clicks and the brakes should lock it took me about 2 hours to adjust the shoes after changing the discs nightmare job

found the reason why i'm having problems.....

the cable on the drivers side doesn't move when applied
so the cable is stuck somewhere in the hosing probably
corroded somewhere. This could also sort the POPPING
i was getting when driving off. the brake lever was released
but felt very loose until the wheels moved breaking the bind
so to speak.

so a new cable i think.

The only disadvantage of the Calibra being so low is getting under it
to make the adjustments.

handbrake sorted now. the passenger side was seized so not applying so

on goes the new cable and all adjusted. this also cured the POPPING i used to get when the handbrake was released. the lever use to go all loose until the car rolled forward and POPPED the handbrake off. I thought this was the ratchet. saved me looking at that now.

Car even flew through the MOT:D

Actually i never want to get under the car again. I got a bit stuck and panicked when i couldn't get out (what a sap eh:oops: ). When car was fully jacked up my chest was just rubbing the underside.
