Tracking/balance...wobble!

by lammy » Mon Aug 21, 2006 5:03 pm

Well i've had the tracking done and believe my wheels are balaced..spiggots are on hubs...Can any one tell me of a place that will sort out any steering wobble once and for all...I've heard theres a place that can sort it completely and does some kind of "hub simulation" to get the wheels perfectly balanced and will guarentee the riding of any steering wheel movement!...is it possible?..cos i'd pay any price to have it done!!....

I had 3 spigot rings missing out of mine. had the tracking done before i noticed (some sod must have nicked them when the wheels were off) and the wheels balanced still slight wobble but the vibration through the seats was unbearable.

Now the spigots are all in the wheels i had the tracking re checked and was told it was 1mm out and as it was acceptable not worth having it done. i think my problem lies with the suspension set up ie i have lowered springs 40mm all round but have what looks like standard shocks (they are black with no writing on) on the front and gmax on the rear. the wheels are 17/215 /45 so maybe the front struts need changed and maybe the wishbones.

I had a vibration at 60-70 mph, balanced wheels, did tracking tried other wheels, tyres, driveshafts, took wheels off and polished wheel to disc face, no joy, then fitted new discs and pads but made sure I polished up the hubs (behind discs) until they were gleaming!!! Now it is cured! Either the discs were out of shape or there was corrosion behind disc, pushing wheel slightly of true!!!

seems that these sysmtons are very commom on callys, must admit mines not great either , fine at upto 60ish, wobble at 70ish,seems to go after that,

did you check the discs after you took, em off, was it worse under braking ?

mines fine on the brakes.

lammy where did you get your spigot rings, as i not far from you, might try that first, although i,ve got a repaired alloy on but is just been balanced recently, no diferance, might try spigot rings ,then tracking.

how can i tell if its a front shocker, what sysmtons, does this give ??

Shock absorbers sould not affect anything if you are diving straight at a constant speed on a flat road. If you have symptons diving straight at a constant speed on a flat road then it's not caused by the shock absorbers..

I had two spiggot rings missing. did the front one straight away.. the back wheels had locking nuts and no key. Yesterday I welded and sheared off 6 bolts onto the locking bolt untill I got it off - no spiggot ring so I made one (was at work - found some suitable ally tube and bored / turned it to size).

Since I brought the car last year it's been vibrating over 60 and getting worse. now it drives like a dream - completely transformed.

Check the wheels for buckles - jack each wheel up and spin it to see if it';s running out at all (eccentric and / or buckled)

if the rim is out at all focus on that point is damage spiggot ring, buckled wheel, mis seated disc etc. also the tyres could be f**ked so look at them too.

Good luck.

just had my front wheels off and on inspection found the discs were not screwed on.The discs are after market grooved things. the drivers side has like a grub screw thing in the hole where i imagine the original disc would have screwed onto. this then causes the disc to move but not much as the grub thing prevents it but still slight movement non the less. the passenger side does not have anything there at all so the disc moves freely on the huband is not secure. i would therefore imagine that even with the wheels securely bolted on there would be some play as the bolts are not atight fit through the hole. maybe this is what is contributing to my vibration problem.

I assume this because looking on some web sites that sell discs there is like a recess for the screw to go into. Would have taken pictures but the camera is sh*gged.

thanks lammy over that way friday,

about this wobble !!

i checked my front disc on the side that i thinks wobberling , n/s front, and on inspection, of the disc for the front seem ok , not much of a lip.

but on further inspection, of the rear of the disc , this is badly lipped, could this be the cause, although its alright underbraking,no judder.

i am i right in thinking it could be a sticky brake caliper causing uneven wear to the disc, and causing my speed wobble !!!

my wobble turned out to be the wheels were were not on tight enough. tightened up and all now appears ok
