Abs and traction control

by sinbrad » Fri Aug 18, 2006 3:05 pm

Well guys yet another problem! As stated earlier I was getting the ABS light coming on, now the traction control is coming on? When the car first starts all the check lights come on and go off, which to me means a clean bill of health? When I drive off, after a few minutes the ABS light comes on. Also the Traction control has now started to come on. Are they both linked and could the same problem be affecting both? I was thinking possibly sensors. possibly dirt gotten into them? Let me know if anyone has had the same probs and what was the outcome. All replies welcome

Yep they use the same sensors, and toothed rings. As you say, the problem could simply be dirt clogging the teeth and confusing the system. More likely to be a faulty sensor though.

Great, I'll give it a go. But torrential rain up here stops me from doing anything at the moment! Will let you know the outcome when the better weather comes in?

Tech 1 diagnostic result!

by sinbrad » Tue Aug 22, 2006 8:03 pm

Got the other half to take the cali into the local garage to get a diagnostic done. Result was as follows...

Traction control motor and front left ABS wheel speed sensor, possible air gap.

Looked on v6 site and it states that if one if showing a fault ie abs then more often than not the TC will show up as a fault as well? Will have to wait until I return home next week to get in about the sensors etc to see if it's clogged up with gunk? As said earlier the local scrappy has just received a v6 which is in good nick, will try and do a deal with the guy and see if I can get hold of the TC throttle body and swap it to see if it's in working condition. Going by the v6 site, will dismantle one or the other and see if it's the brushes as mentioned? Starting to like this taking things apart.

Are all four (or are there only two on V6?) ABS speed sensors the same part number and what are the part numbers required? Will the new ones come with all fitments etc?

Sinbrad, I had the same prob. It was ONLY the faulty Abs sensor. Do that first and worry about the TC motor only if changing the wheel sensor doesnt cure it. Give the old sensor a good spray with WD40 and make sure you have a good fit with the Allen key and as deep into the bolt as possible before you attempt to turn it. You can round out the bolt very easily and then its a real problem. Good luck!

Managed to get hold of a TC throttle body for a tenner. Not had a go at taking it apart as yet, that will have to wait 'til next week and then will have a go at the sensor as you suggested first?

Sorry forgot to ask, does anyone know the parts no.s for the abs sensors. Is there a different number for front/rear and left/right?

cheers
