Smash damage!

by ash_pearce » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:29 pm

first of all sorry bout the essay!

right then as some of you may have read i now own a v6, bought with the odd prob, one being a wobble when doing anything over 65mph.

after further investigation ive found that it must have been in a smash in earlier life as the rear quarter has been replaced... to cut a long story short ive been measuring under the car and have found that the distance from the front wheels to the back is 10mm larger on the drivers side(bumped side). i have measured from various points under the car and it looks like the rear wheel is pointing out at the front aswell. im really ******* off about it and dont know what to do. when you drive above 65 the car feels very unsteady and as you increase the speed the wobble/vibration is so bad the cd player skips. please excuse my lack of technical knowledge and description, any ideas would be gratefully aprieciated!

probably cure that by replacing the rear wishbones/subframe

i did think that but 6 of the 10mm lost is from the front of the car to the bolt that secures the subframe to the car. im not sure of its exact name but basically the mount that is closest to the front of the car :S sorry for the lame description!!

if its that bad its causing cd's to skip I think you can save yourself that test fee and book it in somewhere with a jig to be honest mate

its got worse in the week ive had it, ive drove to and from cardiff twice and i had to stay below 60 on the way back last night. playing around earlier i found that there was a fair amount of play in the mount that holds the subframe to the car. if i was to replace the mount and possibly the subframe or wishbone and that brought the toe in would it really matter if the wheel was further back?

if its further back on one side it wont be rolling true, so will have the same effect as steering out slightly on one wheel, will be lethal ..... and eat tyres

take it for a couple of LOCAL no obligation quotes then you'll be able to gauge for yourself if your up to doing what it needs, using it for any kind of journey would be madness in that state, and it'll only get worse ...... sorry

be worth getting some quotes mate, shouldnt cost anything for that or have any obligation and at least you'll know how much it'll cost to fix, you might even be wrong and its something far simpler.

I guess thats why the guy swapped it for your 16V tho, he probably did get it looked at first.

tbh if it needs jigging it'll cost a bomb, it would certainly be enough to write it off if through insurance anyway
