ABS fault - HELP!!

by Doodley » Fri Jan 27, 2006 2:14 pm

I recently took my car 4 an mot, it failed because the ABS light is on. The ABS does not function, anybody know why? I have only recently bought the car, the owner had aftermarket alloys on it, but he took these off and put 14" corsa GSI wheels on. When i bout the car the ABS light was not on, any ideas why? is it possible that the smaller wheels couldve cut throu an ABS wheel sensor cable? The garage said it could cost up to £800  for them to fix if worst came to the worst. Any ideas anyone?!

what year is it? you might be able to do a test on it, have a search for abs codes, cant see it being the wheels messing it up, most likely a speed sensor.

the fault code given is that the ABS ECU is fualty, I only have a cavalier handbook (have not had chance 2 buy calibra 1 yet) it says the ABS ECU is under the sill on the passenger side.is this the same for the calibra? I cannot find it!

It could be in the engine bay, black box next to ABS valve block.

*edit*

Just looked in manual

The control unit is located under a cover in the passenger sill, to the left-hand side of the seat.

u were right the first time, its next to the ABS valve block with the relays, i cleaned the connections & put it back together, the ABS light went out, then after about 5mins of driving it came back on again! Replace the ECU i guess?

after you cleaned the connections etc did you leave the battery disconnected for 1/2 hour to 1 hour, that will clear the codes then if its still faulty then the eml should come back on, might be something to do with the abs sensors rather than the ecu maybe, not too sure though
