Pothole damage?

by Adrian » Fri Mar 31, 2006 1:58 pm

My nearside front wheel dropped into a serious pothole recently. It felt like someone swinging a wrecking-ball a the car. I was doing about 40 at the time, then when I reached a stretch of dual carriageway and got up to 50 or so a really strong vibration started up. It seems to last all the way up to 80 and rather than coming through the steering wheel, it feels more like it comes through the whole car :icon_pale

I've had a look around the control arms & joints etc. but can't see anything. If it was the wheel I'd of thought it would be more pronounced in the steering wheel. The steering wheel actually seems to judder less than the pedals!?! This is sickening as the car's been lovely and scmooth for 12 years now, then some bleedin' lazy County Council doesn't do it's job and disturbs my peace. What could make the whole car judder at speed and not so much the steering wheel?

That road outside your place had some nasty bumps in it earlier this year

As for the other bits not sure as anything down there i would have thought would transfer through the steering wheel

If you were doing 40mph then you really need to get the suspension arms checked and the tracking.

Yar. Well I'll have to get the tracking done cos I can't see anything obvious. I know it sounds crazy but it almost feels like the driveshaft is out of balance. Would that be possible? The vibration is so deep and shakes the gear knob more than the steering wheel!

I did try to snap the hole on the way back. It was on the A35 through Slepe Tim. It had a big white ring painted around it but was covered by water so it was mostly invisible. But the road being fast and narrow made self-preservation a priority that prevented closer inspection.
