ABS sensor type question and toothed rings?

by Red_Calibra » Tue Apr 18, 2006 8:38 pm

Is there a particular type or number of front ABS sensor I need for a 1991 8v 2.0 Calibra?. I've seen a couple for sale in various places, including eBay, and most of them state "Fits Cavailier/Calibra/Corsa" or something similar. Are they pretty much as universal fitting as that?.

I know the early ones were supplied in metal housings and later ones were plastic, but is that the only difference and can I replace a metal one with a plastic one?.

Also, whilst cleaning the front toothed rings on the car, I noticed a rather large crack on the passenger side ring. The sensor has been sitting far too close and has worn a 1-2mm gap around the entire circumference of the teeth as well.

Can these be replaced without having to also replace the CV joint?. The toothed rings on there own I mean?. If not, how much am I looking at for a replacement CV joint of the correct type with the toothed ring on it? ( Supply only, will fit myself ).

Think you are right there are two types.
I had lost a metal type one on my 95 se4 on the rear.
I just went to the local scrapyard and gently knocked/ pulled it off in one piece.
The guy was a little unhappy as he reckons he couldnt sell on the hub etc
Went back home knocked it back on again slowly checking level as much as poss and touch wood have had no probs since.
Fronts are a different story due to the drive shaft. But you should be able to adjust the sensor, may need a fair amount of wd40 1st!
A new one is about £40 from a vaux dealer, unsure if the cav is the same but count the number of teeth (29 teeth comes to mind)and measure gap.

Cheers for the info m8.

Anyone else?. Are the sensors interchangeable and can I get away with replacing just the toothed ring?
