Clunk heard when turning?

by sinbrad » Thu Apr 20, 2006 11:13 am

Well another little question for you folks out there...have been having this clunking type sound coming from the driver's side front wheel when turning, wait for it, right. Spoke with the local garage bods and they seem to think that it is an outer cv joint issue? Well I would accept that as not being much of a mechanic myself but when looking through one of my many handbooks, I came across something which they state is a Top Tip? Well, it said that if you hear a noise coming from the loaded side whichever you are turning on, in this case the right hand side, it is a wheel bearing problem? So there we have it, it's either the outer cv or a wheel bearing? Your advice is greatly appreciated

It's not a continuous clonk, it's only being heard when turning a corner, specifically one of those small white roundabouts. It would be probably better if it was happening all the time but as I said it's only appearing at I would suggest almost full lock? There's no grating noise or anything just that one clonk? it doesn't happen when going round normal roundabouts and corners only when the turn is tight?

Usualy when you just started to move? like reversing or turning from parking?
One clonk and thats it nothing while driving... i got that too - my guess is also anti-roll link...
Its not expensive - how big problem is it to change it? is it better to go to mechanic or it can be done on parking lot?

Well popped down to a local mechanic today, one that I had missed in the past and had been recommended to visit. Told him the problem and he said straight away that it was a wishbone problem? Put the car up onto the hyraulic ramp and showed me the problem and he was spot on. Even for a not so mechanically minded person I could see exactly what he was talking about. So bought a pair of wishbones today and should arrive monday or tuesday and he will fit them for a small fee. Hopefully that will solve the problem and either way will report back the outcome

I heard a similar sort of noise coming from my right front and took it to Vauxhall. They said that the engien and box were knackered. I still haven't found the extent of the porblem, but my mechanic tells me its probably the strut on that side.

Im gonna replace the suspension, wishbones and rebuilt the fronts up when money will allow, but let me know how you get on with your cause

Cheers

Is the clunk just to the the right? does it go away once the car has warmed up a bit. Might be your steering rack....

i know mine, especially on cold mornings, has a clunk in the steering when turning to the right. After about 5 - 10 mins it goes away. Comes back in the morning when car cold again.

If it was wheel bearing for future thoughts jack the car up and see if there is any play in the wheel.

Could be tie rod end ball joint, that what was picked up on my car at MOT, and seeing as ive had new wishbones and cv joints im guessing they are right.

Well guys, My friendly local mechanic was right. It was after all, the wishbones. Ordered some over the weekend and arrived on tuesday, fitted first thing wed by said mechanic, in a blistering time I may add. Took car out for a test drive and not a squeak comes from it now But whilst he was fitting the wishbones he took a good look underneath and said it won't be long before the subframe bushes will need replaced. On order and getting done as soon as, better be safe than sorry. Thanks for all the advice from you guys. No doubt I'll be firing in further questions for you throughout the forthcoming months?
