You could lock the large nut in a vice and turn the hub with a bar to loosen/tighten or use a very large pair of stiltson.

Probably a similar tool as used on an angle grinder to change discs.

if you don't have steilsons to use, then just do as you say, but make the holes in the tool the same size as the holes in the nut and just put a couple of bolts through.. either through the tool and tighten a nut on, or just put the bolts through both and put on a nut. but easier/stronger than milling some pins.
have done a set, but can't remember what i did.

I think not all the images are displaying but the image links still work (Problem porting the thread over from the old forums I expect, max 10 images per post)
