Steering Rack

by Calibra_Mike » Mon Oct 29, 2007 12:56 am

Im trying to work out if Ive got a problem with my steering rack...

1. Ive still got a heavy shaking through the steering wheel between 60-70mph

2. When stationary, I seem to have a bit of play in the steering wheer before the wheels turn and also there's a bit of a clunking noise

3. Inside the engine bay if I grab the track rod where it meets the rack it wobbles a bit...

Is it time to change the steering rack???

1. Shaking at specific speed can be caused by bad rims - if rim is curved or not balanced - check your rims and get them balanced - when you are balancing wheels look at them - often outside (face) of rims is ok but inside is curved and woobles

2. That is sign of bad steering rack but clunking can also be caused by bad ball joints, wishbones, cv joints, engine mounts... check those also

3. same as no 2.

Probaly steering rack is near end but other things that I mentioned should be checked before you decide to change steering rack...
