Handbrake - not working at all

My handbrake doesn't work at all. When I pull on handbrake handle it goes up but doesn't click & doesn't stay "locked" in upright position. The handbrake light goes on. There is no noise coming from brakes. It just happened tonight so I didn't have time to investigate. Anybody experienced this?

Managed to have a closer look today at work, it was the release button sticking inside the handle itself and thats why it didn't hold up. Removed the gaiter, adjusted handle & button as well(the handle is an aftermarket Richbrook one). Sorted! Thanks for replies guys.
