Rear brake backings rusted through

by Pedro80 » Thu May 21, 2015 9:48 pm

Hi Guys. Got the old problem of the handbrake shoe pins grinding the hub because the rear brake backing is rusted through on my 94 turbo. Did anyone find a solution for this? Does anyone know where I can find replacements? I've looked everywhere. Also, how would I go about fixing this problem and keeping the old girl on the road?
Thanks for any advice in advance- it's much appreciated.

I got new ones from Autovaux two years ago,you should try
them, hopefully they still have some. Before that I put penny
washers on the back to hold the pins as a temporary fix.

Cheers guys. Thanks for the call Callyman. Yup, I'll washer them up and see if they hold.
Thanks again.

Hi Pedro, I used some quick steel to bond the largest washers i could get to the backplate, I also put the 2 springs on the hand brake shoes at the back of the shoes. A very old mechanic frend told me to do that as the springs are under tension, they try to pull the shoes away from the backplate resulting in the pins being ripped from the rusty backplate. By reversing the springs you are making the springs pull the shoes to the backplate and taking the pressure off the pins. I never had a problem with the pins after i did this. I hope this helps :)

Why did you make one of the hub face holes bigger?
