C20NE Auto sporty drive probs

by Nikki » Sun May 15, 2005 3:27 am

Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I drive a red C20NE auto 1994 model and I'm having an intermittent problem upon starting. The 'sporty drive programme' light on my dash flashes and when I put into Drive and accellerate the engines revs but the car doesn't move doh!! Then if I turn the ignition off and back on again I get absolutely nothing - the engine won't even crank - and the 'sporty drive' light on my dash still flashes.
Doesn't happen all the time - only when my Dad's not around doh!
Can anyone give me some advice please???
thanks...........Nikki

Hi and welcome to the club

Forgive my ignorance of the auto gearbox, first thing to check would be the oil level! however you do that..

If the level is ok, then have a read here http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm which is a quide to reading the main computers fault codes, on'ce you've worked out how to do that you can use the same tequnique but by shorting pins A and C instead to get the auto gearbox fault codes

I don't know if any gearbox related problems will stop the car running though? maybe worth cheking the fault codes for the main computer while you're at it.

I'm not sure which models/years you can test using this method, so it might not work, but give it a try

sounds like low oil level as with out the oil in a auto box the torque converter (basicly the clutch) has nothing to work with and is free spining in air.

The torque converter for those who dont know consistes of a kind of compressor and turbine blades with oil in between.

The compresor blade is fitted to the flywheel and the turbine blade to the gearbox.

As the compressor rotates the fluid acts against the turbine blade and it in turns rotates as u cant compress a liqued.

That the basics just so it cleares up why it woudnt work without oil.

There is a test u can do on a auto box if its working, u stick into Drive with the handbrake and push the foot brake as hard as u can, then gently increse the throttle as far as it will go,
the revs should go no higher than about 2750rpm,

U should not do this more than once with in 30mins as the auto box can overheat.
Nor should u do it that offten.

Is the car in either park or neutral when you try to start it ???????
Cos you won't get a sausage if it isn,t
