Knocking
Knocking
I've found a little knock as I turn the wheel slightly one way then back again. I only have to do it slightly for it to do it.
It does it at what ever point the steering wheel is at too, whether I'm stood or moving.
Any ideas?

i think I've got the same thing!,when I'm sat in it at the lights and move the wheel it go's stiff a bit then knocks then if i keep turning it fine, but it will keep on doing it if i move the wheel over the some bit(if that makes sense),some times when I'm turning at speed on a long bend the steering go's tight and if i steer it slightly more in to the corner it sort of knocks and loosens up again!!,is this what u had?,
have u got a pic of the bolts u tightened up,please,

mine started doing this yesterday, went to a garage today and they just checked the power steering fluid which was thick black, they told me the power steering rack and pump needed replacing... vxhall retail is over £1000 for the parts new seen they can go from £30 - £100 s/h for the racks. hopefully it isn't the rack!
mine is only when i turn the steering to the RIGHT, in the same place as well, just as i turn right, i get resistance, then the knock, and i can steer clearly through it after that. never happens when i turn back LEFT through it. doesn't happen when i turn left at all.
makes me think it could be something to do with something on the driver's side of the car, not the steering rack?
ANY ADVICE?!

My 16v`s been like this for a year or so, its fine alot of the time but sometimes it seems to jam and on pulling a bit harder it clicks/snaps and then works fine past this point, on the way back it may or may not do it, but when it does its always in the same place , its the pas rack on mine, i changed the fluid a couple of times and it doesnt do it much, luckily it didnt on its mot!

i presumed it was the rack because its the hardest bit to do, being behind the engine!
i disconected both sides and turned the wheels , steering both by hand , they felt smooth,
then i turned the steering wheel side to side and it still did it, when not connected to the wheels so it wasnt the wheels,
i turned the engine off and turned the steering wheel, and it still did it although it was difficult to tell when it `stopped` as i had to pull the steering so hard, but it did still click,
I found a place in chester by me that will do a recon one for about 80 pound , but never bothered gettimg one as it makes it more fun driving!

what do you mean by 'disconnected both sides'? sorry mate, haven't a clue where steering is concerned..
although i think i've made one discovery... the position where my steering knocks seems to be the same position where the 'steering lock' locks when you turn the engine off!
maybe there is a cure?

Jack both sides at the front up and remove the wheels , on the front strut, by the damper at the bottom of the spring is a ball joint, this is atached at both sides to the stering rack by long bars,
you need a ball joint undoing tool of the type that takes a spanner and pushes them apart i paid about 10 pound for one, (dont use the fork type that hammers into the joint as it always damages the joint)
Theres a nut under the ball joint (i think!), undo this and then use the tool to push the joint out from the `arm` .
do both sides and the steering will be dissconected from the struts, then you can turn the hubs back and forward to check for binding and the same with the steering.

thats the same as me when i turn right,at a point i get resistance then a click/knock and then after that point it feels free and moves smooth,
turning left is fine for me,
your scareing me now because if it is the rack and vauxhall charge over a grand just for the part my cally will be scrapped or stripped for parts,
thats more than my cars worth!!!!

believe you me jay, i've got that scare today to, you can pick these things up at the breakers though, a little research has shown between £30-£100 for the rack s/h. i went to vxhall today and you're right, its one mofo load of wedge that i'm not going to pay, and i don't want to break me cally cos i've just had it sprayed and its in good nick. will try to get hold of another one and hopefully sort it for £250 at most??? i'm 21, just consider it one of life's learning curves!
