Renovating the power steering

by debowen » Thu Aug 04, 2005 1:42 am

I drove a "for sale" Cally (just tyre kicking) and noticed the difference in the power steering. Her's was much lighter and turned from lock to lock without moaning. (as mine does)

So where do I start? How far should I go as I have the system in some degree of dismemberment?

Experienced operators please reply with step by step process! Thanks.

I actually removed my power steering and fitted an electric system from a 106/Saxo. It's a bit lighter and doesn't make too much fuss. It's also pretty easy to fit - one pump, and some simple wiring!

If it's groaning then chance are the PAS Pump is on the way out. I replaced my Rack a couple of years ago. The Recon rack cost me £125 and I fitted it myself, took 7 hours in total and was a nightmare job.

My pump's moaning like an old woman... I'm trying to pluck up the courage to attempt changing it, but on the air-con turbo it looks like a nightmare job - radiator out, manifold off and turbo out, just to undo the bottom bolt!!!! arg!!!

Well the fittings on the 106 pump are the same as the turbo rack - so I just screwed one in and clipped the other on - then wired it in to the ignition with some heavy duty wire and a big-ol' fuse and away you go! Simple. Really!

Did you leave the old pump on or take it off and fit a shorter fan belt?? I might consider fitting a 106 pump cos mine is starting to get noisey!!

Any noticeable change to engine characteristics when you did this?? (quicker revving??)

Power Steering

Can anyone tell me where I can buy new power steering pipes (the ones that run at the bottom of the radiator). Mine are rotten and I dread to think how much they will be off Vauxhall  if they still sell them.

Thanks

Welcome aboard Nicola. The new pipes are better off bought from Vauxhall. If you are a club member you get trade discount.

BTW, my wife has the same name as you, small world.

The old pump came off because my turbo is too large to accomodate anything else in front of the engine.

It's not far different to the stock setup to be honest - a little lighter at low speeds.

Belt wise, I had to change my pulleys from multi-v to single-v, fit an adjustable alternator bracket and play around with belt lengths.
