Alternator worries

by midnightv6 » Wed Aug 10, 2005 2:25 pm

My battery light comes on gradually when I am sat at lights..... and dissapears if I rev the engine.
It also gets worse if I load it up with interior fans and fogs lights and the like.

The voltameter is showing a steady 14 volts....
And the car starts first time everytime
Is my alternator ok!?

Cheers

Yup, it's fine just a little underpowered. Probably a 70amp alt - replace it with a 120amp one, when it blows (could be tomorrow, could be in 10 years time...).
Nothing to worry about at the mo.

Hi,

Well it's not dead yet but these are the tell tale signs that it's on its way out, be it gradually or sudden.

Best to get it sorted out as to avoid any nasty surprises.

Will the 120 amp Alternator do ay harm seeing as it is kicking out a bigger ampage???
What is the difference in price?

And how much to get a mechanic to fit it....I have heard it's not a job for the office worker! (I'll do brakes and the small jobs, but I think this one has 5 spanners in the Haynes manual)

Never done the alternator, was brave enough to take on the head gaskets, but that's another story. Doesn't look a nice job on a V6, even with the heads off, i'd say you'd need to be underneath in a pit. Are you sure the drive belt is OK and tensioned correctly???

Just spoke to a mate who refirbs them....said he will do one for 30 quid!
Can't hold my nose up at that so I'm going to get it anyway and wait for the one on my car to go properly before paying anyone to fit it.

Still no one know what it costs to fit then???:

hi just done one on a v6 the guy had noisy bearings so i took it off replaced bearings and refitted it it now all quit again if its an ac delco there easy if is a bosch you have to remove the driveshaft to get it out as its a larger unit takes about an hour to get an ac delco off and an hour to get back on and am no expert

The aircon equipped V6's had 120amp alternators, which are Bosch ones. While you're doing it, go for the 120amp one, leaves you with more flexibility for the future. I paid to have mine fitted - £200 inc a NEW alternator AND labour, which I thought was worth it, as I couldn't be arsed with doing it myself

Was that with a vauxhall mechanic/dealer or a private mechanic?

So you reckon about 2hours labour?

A vaux specialist, but only a normal type garage. "Stansted Specialist Car Services" was the place.

I reckon 2 hours is about right....
