Clunking when on fall lock

by VivSE5 » Fri Aug 12, 2005 11:36 pm

As the title says, had new bushes, new arms? if thats what you call them,
so what else do I cross off the list?
And while we are at it, my handbrake doesnt always work, had it so called fixed at garage, but its gone again, got to leave it in first gear, lucky I was sat in it when the handbrake failed, went bang and off went my car!!!
Not going near the garage that did god knows what to it! you can hear grinding when you drive as well.

Any advice?
Got to find a decent garage round here, the one I used is now flats!!!

rhythmical clonks linked to speed ur driving? CV joints on the driveshafts.
handbrake sounds a bit buggered, will need pulling apart to look i'd think, possibly one of the securing pins has shered off or similar if it went clonk and released on its own.. a new brake shoe fitting kit (few springs and bolts) should be all thats needed.

Time to buy a haynes?

Best to pull you brakes apart does sound like the retaining pin and spring has popped off. Can cause some nasty scoring and knacker you brake shoes, not that they are used much.
Mine did this, used a washer tacked welded on the back plate with a sideway hole to enable the pin to slot through. Otherwise you may have to replace the backplate it the hole is knacked. Not a nice job.
pretty sure someone esle have this recently aswell.

I've had the pin go on mine before as well but the handbrake could also be down to the cable - it may have snapped.

As for the clonking, as already said, it could be your cv joint. Is it just a single clonk or is it continuous and/or speed related?

Make sure everything is very tight. As I posted on someone elses thread, the wishbone bolts might not be tight enough or if its an aftermarket wishbone, the inserts may not have been fitted. Also get someone to check the steering rack bolts are tight - that could be moving!

maybe a top strutt mount or something then, get it up in the air and get them to check for play. check the trackrod ends over a pit on the ground, rest can be checked by wobbling the wheel by hand in the air. shoudlnt be any play in anything left/right or up/down. should be fairly easy to locate like that.
