deadlocks

Have you had a look inside the door new8V ?, and if so , is the locking ring on the back of the barrel intact?
If they've used force on the lock they might have broken the ring on the back. (it sits on the back of the barrel and when you turn the key a little 'dogleg' flicks the microswitch to activate the alarm/deadlocks etc.
If you haven't already, try manually activating the microswitches and see if it will still lock/unlock the car. If you need to it's a fairly simple job to replace the dogleg ring, I had to do mine a few years ago (prior to delocking) as it had snapped in 1/2 and would often prevent me locking properly as it was jamming when the lock barrel turned.

should have said really that ive replaced the locking mechanism inside so i can still use my original key. alarm and central loking works but dead locks dont. was wondering if it needed to be reset or something cos its an electrical deadlock(i think). if the locking ring on the barrel had been broken would the key not work the lock? Mate of mine sanded down the barrel slightly so the key worked better. The pins inside were not sitting level when the key was put inside so he smoothed them till it turned ok.

Umm, I think the key would still turn , when mine was snapped it was intermittently jamming against the rest of the mechanism, but I could still use the key in the lock.
What happens with the deadlocks when you try the microswitches?
I know when mine was working on the key , if you just locked it, then waited a second and then deadlocked/alarmed, you can hear the deadlocks clicking in.

finally bought a haynes manual and now know why my dead locks dont work. When car was broke into me and a mate (mechanic) cleared all the glass out of the bottom of the door and there was a piece of illuminous yellow colour plastic broken with it all. Put in new glass and locking motor (part of it was bent) and didnt see any use for a bit of plastic. in the manual it says all about the dead locks and how they stop people opening doors when the shouldnt do and there was a picture of this bit of plastic that we threw away. off to the breakers this saturday now to get another one. thanks for the help.
