On the subject of neons...

by TonyDTM » Mon Apr 17, 2006 10:38 pm

I have seen loads of ads recently about neons that go under the lock handles to illuminate them. OK, its an easy and cheap mod and could look quite cool (keep ya opinions)

My question is the wiring. I want to wire these so that when I hit my remote to pop the door locks, these neons light. I dont want them on all the time so I was thinking of a timer relay, say 30 seconds, wired into the window switch pack. I know this is live as soon as I pop the locks as the switchs light up. Anyone done anything like this for other purposes and where I could get a 12v timer relay from?
Cheers

My underlit doorhandles are wired to a ignition live somewhere in the doors so when I turn her on they come on. Not to bothered about it to much though as you can only see the effect at night anyway.:icon_mrgr
I did think about attaching them to the alarm to flash when it was armed, and think I know what your up to, dont know if it'd work though:scratchch

I dont want the neons to light up all the time as I have no intention of driving up the road with neons showing (Police round here dont need a reason to stop me and I'm not about to give them one).
The idea is they light up for 30 or so seconds when I pop the door so if the car is parked in the dark I can see the handle (yeah..i know its a lame excuse).
My alarm has an LED warning light, I could run from that if I wanted to tie the flashing in with it. It would use alot of juice tho and I dont know if the cables would be up to it, and also how long before it drained the battery.

L.e.d's don't usually drain batteries that I know of. The power they actually take is quite small me thinks. But sorry, not quite sure you'll get it to work the way you want it:|

My under handle LED's were (until I shaved the handles) wired to the interior light. So they came on when I unlocked the car with the remote, thus showing you where the handles are in the dark

I also connected my foot well neons to the same circuit.

I have just put LED's under the outside door handle and inside behind the handle. i didn't realise this was such a common thing!

I have wired mine up to the hand brake, so that when the handbrake is on (and the ignition) they light up. I have Clifford remote start so that the LED's come on when i start the car.

I also had a pair of LEDs (fitted to where the lock would have been in each handle) that flashed when the alarm/immobilliser was activated.

They caused quite a stir when I camped over at the Donny show (in 2003!) LOL!

Not that common a thing around here, can't say I know anyone else do it except on the site. Everyone I know say it looks cool so I dont think they're that bad.

on my primera i had leds linked to my remote immobiliser, took a bit of doin and a multimeter is essential, only thing was that once the car was started i couldnt turn them off, but that didnt really worry me as they werent that bright.
