V6 into ecotec: what about traction control?

by BlackKnight » Mon May 22, 2006 10:18 am

I'm sticking a '94 2.5 V6 lump into my '95 ecotec calibra(the engine is from a V6 cav). The V6 engine has electronics for the traction control. The question is, will it work with the ecotecs ABS? If not, what would I need to get it to work?

Also feel free to give your opinions on do I really need TC. Is it that bad? I drove a turbo with FWD only for a couple of days and that was awfull, but the c20let isn't really linear when it comes to torque curves.. and it has masses of torque. V6 should be a lot more smoother and civilized i think?
The engine will not be seriously modded just downpipe + exhaust, 3.0 cams + fpr and that's about it, hoping to get a good healthy 200hp and that'll be enough for me so, TC: yes or no?

TBH for the work involved you may as well buy a v6 to start with.

It's not just a case of dropping in the v6, you'd need to swop over the loom, ecu, coolant pipes, radiator as well.

My sixer was RR'd at 206 bhp with fueling probs and I later found out I'd got the cams mixed up.

I have an F28 gearbox with a Quiafe limited slip differential and even in 3rd I can feel it locking up to sort out traction on the front.

Are you fitting the F25 box or keeping your F20?? The F25 box with longer ratios may help to get you traction.

Kingsley had his 3.0 without TC as his started out as a 16v, drop him a PM.
I used to own this Calibra...
I now own this one.

I agree with the above. I mean you can buy a V6 with TC for around the £1000 mark.

As far as the sentiments go above i would have to agree sell the ecotec and buy a v6.

Youll then have the bigger brakes and 5 stud hubs and wheels.

On the subject of TC a lot really depends on how you drive. If you like to nail it away from starts or out of corners then on a v6 its really neccessary. If your the type who likes to treat a car with respect and gradually wind it up to the 150mph mark then its just a hinderence in the air flow path.

im not selling my ecotec as it is one of the few calibras here in croatia that hasn't been shunted. and it's even more special as it's an ecotec - galvanised body and all that so, there's no way im selling it - ever.
in short, the ecotec engine is crap but i basicly bought the car just for the shell. a mint calibra shell is quite rare here.
and v6s are extremely rare here.. there's probably like 2-3 in good condition in whole of croatia and importing calibras is not allowed.

i was planing on installing a redtop with sbddev.co.uk tapered TB setup which costs a fair bit of money, and this cheap V6 came along, cost me about 400 euros.
not to mention the lazyness of the ecotec engine is already annoying me seriously.
my mechanic will swap the engines for another 400 euros. and i already have a buyer for my ecotec for 350 euros. so it's not that expensive...
keeping the gearbox, rad, starter and a/c off the ecotec, it is supposed to work :/

brakes will be upgraded anyway.. i'd upgrade the v6 brakes also, so there's not much extra cost there :/ gonna get the 308mm 4 stud kit + greenstuf from lmf and goodridge lines and that'll cure the problem

plus i can order the vauxhall vectra gsi brackets from opel in germany, but they cost 200 euros - pair, and then i still need 308mm discs drilled to 4 stud and turbo/v6 calipers. so i might as well get the whole kit(discs, pads, calipers, brackets and spigot rings) from lmf which costs like 500 euros.

still the question is, would i need the ABS unit from a v6 also? and ABS sensors? are they different? or is it just the question of ECU having an extra wire for controlling the throttle body flap?

If you're planning FWD V6, why not FWD C20 LET?

i had two turbos already.. naturally i drove a bit without 4x4(spare wheel on).. it's not much fun. the turbo kicks in - the wheels lose grip - in almost any gear.

V6 develops torque much more politely and does not provoke nearly as much wheel spin. and obviusly there's a bit more weight over the front wheels that also helps - when grip is concerned

and i dont want a turbo engine anyway. obviously i've had a couple before, there's always problems with them.. hairline craks in inlet piping(obviously there's a lot of piping) all kinds of valves malfunctioning - all difficult to diagnose. and then there are turbo repairs, oil in inlet piping.. and in the end, turbos are not really my cup of tea anymore, N/As are much more refined and driveable on the track and on the road.
turbos are best if you're into quarter mile racing - big hp is available for reasonably low cost.

anyway, i gave up on that particular v6 i bought and sold it. it needed too much work to get it into good condition. looking for a good mv6 now, lol

in the meantime i installed clear glass headlights from illusion wohoo
