Fault Codes 31 & 48

by buzzaldrin » Sat Sep 30, 2006 10:37 am

Hello everyone,

Just done the paperclip test on my car and got fault codes 31 & 48.

48 is low voltage on the battery, which I think does need charging up. However, I don't know what to do about 31.

Recently, the car has been intermittently plagued by the ECU light coming on, at which point the car either loses power or cuts out. Not good, obviously.

If anyone can suggest a remedy for fault 31 I would appreciate it.

Cheers.

D'oh!

Just found out that engine not running will cause fault 31.

With engine running, I get fault 48 before the code light resets and goes back to 12, so I don't know if there are any other faults.

Would fault 48 cause the car to go into limp mode though?

Any fault that lasts long enough to store a code will put the ECU into limp mode.

So does that mean by charging up the battery my fault might clear off?

Why is the battery low? Has the alternator light been flickering on? Once they start to die it's better to just buy a new one TBH. Yep, to clear the code disconnect the battery for a bit, or turn the ignition on and off 20 times.
