Does anyone else think that calibra abs brakes are crap? or is it just mine. Hit the slightest damp patch and the brakes give up! Scares the crap out of me every time!!!

Yeah, I find braking traction in general is a bit poo... the abs only kicks in when they'd have skidded, but "sometimes" it does skip and skid well before it should, others its great.. tyre tread/width/pressure and seem to make a fair difference on the cally, get it "just right" and its a heck of a lot better, but you can't drop below 3mm or so or it goes doolally.

Has anyone taken the abs unit out and run with no abs?

You can dissable it fairly easily, but frankly its no better. lol. I've tried. more often than not i'm glad its aboard than without it. you just have to be very carefull about tyre pressures and tread/tyre choice etc to get any form of decent braking.
I find about 3/4 between the unloaded/loaded pressure figures are about right for my setup..

What pressure should it be? If i was to fit bigger brakes wouldn't the problem just be worse?

Pretty much, bigger brakes just mean you can use more duty cycle before overheating afaik, if you have small brakes you can just press the pedel harder for the same braking, just not as often lol.
I don't know what the pressures are officially tbh, I think I used to run 36/38 or something like that, but depends on the tyre width, sidewall strength, load, suspension geometry etc etc as to whats best grip wise, then you have the txb to worry about.. I would stick to book figures unless you're happy to take the risk.( i treat mine a bit mean, and often pay the price.)

check your abs rings on the front cv joints as I have found on alot of cavs and calibras the ring snaps and causes a bigger gap on one wheel making the abs kick in far to soon
a new cv joint solves the problem!
