Question for V6 boffins

by WillsToy » Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:27 am

I have a friend who is changing his alternator on a V6 Vectra.
Now one of the bolts is far too long to be removed as it his the bodywork/cross member.
We both think he has to drop the engine to get the said altenator out.

Is this the same for the calibra or does anyone know of any clever tricks bar cutting the bolt?

cheers in advance for any replies

Some of the problems with the v6 alternater comes if your fitting an aftermarket one which is slightly larger and can make you have to remove some of the exhaust system to get the new one in. With the original one itis possible to "wiggle" it in without removal of anything.

You should'nt have to drop the engine just to change the alt surely, even Vx wouldn't do that. Is it possible that the alt was fitted to the engine when it was out of the car, and the bolt was put through the wrong way?

I don't know the V6 setup, however had this problem with an early LET with the pivot setup rather than fixed alt.
The pivot bolt was put in the wrong way round so too long to remove.. easy solution, undo the mount from the engine, remove the lot, remove the pivot bolt.. put back the right way..

may or may not help depending on the setup.

its possible to change the calibra v6 alternator without dropping the engine or removing the driveshaft, with the front is jacked up its just possible to remove. as for the bolts, the bottom one should pull out towards the driver side, the top one pulls out towards passenger side and is a real pain to get back in again. if the top bolt was put in the other way then it would be impossible to remove, would catch on the body - get that hacksaw out!!

As Marko says...if the bolt has ben put in the wrong way during original fitment then you could cut it off then refit a new one the easier way. Would save extra jobs now and make it easier should you ever have to do it again in the future.
