What is this noise? (power steering related)

by L337 calibra » Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:21 pm

Few days ago I noticed a bit of leakage around the PAS bottle, opened it up to find nothing inside, leak was from the top hose that joins to the bottle the locknut was loose.

Around the same time as the leak I started hearing this shreiking noise.

Thinking oh I need fluid I got some, did the instructions according to Cav16 got to the bit to discharge, pumped pedal 25 times, didnt hear any whooshes but assumed it wouldnt as I thought there aint no fluid.

Opened Pas bottle to find it between Max and Min with some horrible looking black fluid, so where was all the fluid? BTW I was running with F19 pulled prior to this I know the 4x4 wasnt working so pulled it anyway, did all the fluid stay in the accumulator because it was techincally disconnected?

Anyway ive made a short vid showing the noise, usually get a small shreik on startup of the car and at each end of lock, the sterring wheel shudders a bit on lock and can hear the pump strain a bit.

Firstly im gonna have to drain the black stuff away, but heres the vid.

where did you do the wheelspin test?? are you sure just the fronts spun? if the 4x4 isn't working the 4x4 light should be on, have you tested by starting the engine with your foot on the brake to see if the light stays on?

Did wheelspin test at a road junction, dry road no gravel

Bulb has blown or removed, I pressed brake pedal on startup and no 4x4 light at all.

ok then with fuse 19 in place when you turn the ignition on you get no 4x4 check light?

how old is your car? cause the earlier turbo's you can read the 4x4 codes

no-one's fitted a switch anywhere have they, to switch between 4x4 and fwd

Hmm, since I bled the system the noise seems to have stopped, steering seems a tad lighter too

Well I undid the hex screw thats part of the accumulator, the guide said thats part of the 4x4 so I dunno.

Anyway a little test today shows that it probably IS working, not too sure, where I was there was a few people about so didnt want to look like a **** but I didnt get any wheelspin and that was on gravel, course the pull off wasnt as quick as it should be because of the wastegate issue.
